Onion
The onion (Allium cepa) is one of the most widely cultivated and consumed vegetables in the world, belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family. Known for its strong aroma, sharp to sweet flavor, and multiple layers, onions are an essential ingredient in almost every cuisine. They can be consumed raw, cooked, fried, dried, or powdered, making them highly versatile.
Onions are available in different varieties such as red, white, and yellow onions, each with unique taste profiles. Red onions are sharp and often eaten raw, white onions are milder and sweeter, while yellow onions are widely used for cooking due to their strong flavor.
They are rich in vitamins (C, B6, folate), minerals (potassium, manganese), and antioxidants like quercetin and sulfur compounds, which contribute to numerous health benefits. Onions are also widely used in the food processing industry for producing onion flakes, powder, paste, and dehydrated products.
