Sugarcane
Sugarcane is a tropical and subtropical grass crop cultivated mainly for its sweet, juicy stalks, which are the primary source of sucrose (natural sugar). It belongs to the Poaceae (Gramineae) family and is one of the most economically important crops globally. India is the second-largest producer of sugarcane in the world, after Brazil, with major cultivation in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat.
Sugarcane is the raw material for the production of white sugar, brown sugar, jaggery (gur), molasses, and ethanol. Its by-products such as bagasse and press mud are widely used in biofuel, paper manufacturing, organic fertilizers, and cattle feed, making it a highly sustainable crop.
It is valued not just for its sweetness but also for its nutritional and medicinal properties, being rich in natural sugars, calcium, iron, magnesium, and vitamins.
